“The World Turtle, also called the Cosmic Turtle or the World-Bearing Turtle, is a mytheme of a giant turtle (or tortoise) supporting or containing the world. It occurs in Hinduism, Chinese mythology, and the mythologies of some of the indigenous peoples of the Americas” – Wikipedia
Hello Friends,
Around this time last year (Oct 2024) I spent 3 weeks in South East Asia and this is another post about some of the temples I visited. It’s taking me a while to get around to all of them due to my essay-writing in between. Also, I haven’t travelled this year considering that I’ve only been in Cape Town since last November, so last year’s trip is still very much with me.
This post is about two sites in Central Java near Surakharta (a.k.a. Solo). Turtle symbolism is present at both of these sites providing evidence of how ancient cultures in different continents had the same symbolic language and understanding of the cosmos.
I have uploaded two click-through photo albums with a description of the day-trip that took me to these two small temple sites – at GypsyCafe.org:

May we travel forever! (Even if just in our dreams and thoughts) 🙂
All the best from Jean-Jacques
